                 LONDON - Some computer users could avoid
                 the millennium bug, which threatens to bring
                 computers crashing down at the start of the year
                 2000, simply by turning off their machines on
                 New Year's Eve 1999, the weekly New Scientist
                 magazine said today.

                 New personal computers contain an adjusted
                 software program called BIOS that should
                 switch the century from 19 to 20 automatically if
                 it discovers that the year has changed from 99
                 to 00.

                 But BIOS, which controls the computer's vital
                 functions, only works each time it is switched on.
                 So the machine must be switched off before the
                 clock strikes midnight at the end of 1999, the
                 magazine said.

                 If a computer is left on, it will probably crash
                 before anyone realizes that something is wrong.

                 In computers without such a capability, internal
                 clocks will automatically revert to the year 1900
                 instead of 2000, which could wreak havoc with
                 the machines' memories.

                 Computers most at risk are network servers and
                 machines that provide World Wide Web sites
                 on the Internet, New Scientist said.
